Another week, another new Set Your Goals song up on their Myspace and.....well let's see shall we?
The first song that SYG put up from their forthcoming record was amazing. 'The Fallen' has been in the public domain for nearly a year now and it's brilliant, classic Set Your Goals, no complaints.
So some time goes by, and then I stumble upon a live video of them playing another new song on the recent New Found Glory U.S. tour. Again, despite the poor sound quality, it sounded awesome.
Fast forward to a couple of weeks back and while sitting in the attic of Niall and Liena's house in Leeds I'm informed that the title track from the forthcoming record 'This Will Be The Death Of Us' was now up on their myspace page. Naturally I was there in an instant and although it maybe took a couple of listens I really liked it. There were a couple of bits that I maybe wasn't too sure of at first, but even those bits have grown on me and I now think it's another sterling effor from the band. Oh and it features Vinnie from The Movielife/I am The Avalanche on guest vocals so, y'know, that makes it even better.
And so we arrive at three days ago. Idly browsing Twitter I notice Hayley from Paramore has been kind of enough to inform her 786582365 followers (I randomly hit numbers then, but it's probably not far off) that SYG will have another new song up on their page at 11am PST, so around 7pm UK time.
I'm stoked.
7pm rolls around and whoah....this isn't Set Your Goals. Did someone out A Day To Remember on instead?! Oh no that really is the singer from Turmoil doing guest vocals. Hmmmmm well okay then.
Now ten minutes ago when I first decided to write this post I had every intention of slating the new song before going on to say that I'm still super excited for the new record. Now the second statement is true, I can't wait for the new record, I'm starting to rethink my initial rejection of this new track. Sure those tough guy vocals near the end are pretty shoddy in my opinion, but the more I listen to it (6 times since I started typing this post) it's kind of growing on me. That riff is pretty catchy come to think of it...
A lot of people have been hating on this new track. People have been into it too, but I'm choosing to ignore the dude who thinks a collaboration of Sum 41 and The Warriors is a good thing. Most people's reasoning for this dislike is that "it's not Set Your Goals!" and although that was kind of my first reaction, the more I sit here and listen it kind of is Set Your Goals you know? I mean listen to the Reset EP and then listen to Echoes, they're hardly the same are they?
From what I've heard, Set Your Goals are progressing; taking their music forward while retaining their core influences and borrowing from a wider field of tastes. I still think the new record will be awesome and I seriously can't wait to see them live again. They've been one of my favourite bands for a while and one song isn't going to change that. I think patience is the key here, just expecting them to rehash 'This Very Moment' over and over again isn't going to do them any favours.
And it could be worse, it could be A Day To Remember.
That dude from Turmoil's vocals are still shit no matter how many times I hear them mind...
