i was fortunate enough to see the dark knight on opening night this week and was blown away.
now i've been in to batman since first seeing the original 60's batman tv show with adam west when i was a kid. in fact one of my earliest telly related memories is watching batman camply fighting crime accompanied by mandatory "zap" and "kepow!" graphics on an old black and white tv.
he is my favourite superhero by a quite some way.
anyway...
i wasn't dissapointed. i was wary of all the hype surrounding heath ledger's role as the joker but he really did surpass jack nicholson's role as the same character. i read somewhere that he spent time in solitary confinement honing the role and it certainly paid. everything right down to the subtlest detail is spot on and he completely stole the show for me. it was slightly weird i must admit, watching a batman film and thinking that batman was overshadowed by another character, but this is not to take anything away from the joker. some of his blackly comic moments, "i'm going to make this pencil dissappear" were brilliant and i feel that he definately deserves to recieve his much talked about his oscar nomination.
christian bale was good, although his ridiculous voice grated at the start. i soon forgot about this though and it;s only really a minor niggle.
the introduction of the 'two face' character was excellent as well although it again meant that some of the focus was drawn away from batman. i could go on for ages about this film, but basically i think anyone with any interest in comic/crime/action films should go and see it. oh and as a quick aside, just because it's a 'comic film' doesn't mean it's not a "proper film". FAO film snobs: YOU DON'T HAVE TO REFER TO IT AS A 'CRIME FILM' WHEN IT ISN'T!
anyway, i'm definately going to see it again this week as i have a week off from work.
